About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and results-driven Underwriting Manager to lead our underwriting operations and ensure that loan applications are assessed accurately, efficiently, and in line with the company’s credit risk policies.
The Underwriting Manager will oversee the underwriting team, review credit decisions, monitor portfolio quality, strengthen underwriting processes, and work closely with the Risk, Credit, Collections, and Operations teams to maintain a healthy loan portfolio.
This role is ideal for a strong credit professional with experience in fintech lending, digital lending, consumer finance, or financial services, who is capable of balancing responsible lending with business growth.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the underwriting team, ensuring accurate and timely assessment of loan applications
Review and approve/recommend loan applications in line with established credit policies and approval limits
Assess borrower creditworthiness using financial information, credit history, transaction data, and other relevant risk indicators
Monitor underwriting decisions and identify trends that may increase portfolio risk
Develop, implement, and continuously improve underwriting policies, procedures, and credit assessment criteria
Monitor underwriting team performance and establish KPIs to improve productivity, accuracy, and turnaround time
Analyse portfolio performance, repayment behaviour, delinquency, and default trends
Work closely with the Collections team to identify high-risk accounts and support appropriate recovery strategies
Investigate underwriting errors, credit disputes, and cases of potential fraud or policy violations
Support the development and refinement of credit scoring models and automated decision-making processes
Prepare and present regular underwriting and portfolio risk reports to management
Ensure compliance with internal credit policies, regulatory requirements, and responsible lending practices
Conduct regular quality checks and audits of underwriting decisions
Train, coach, and develop underwriting team members to improve their credit assessment and analytical skills
Collaborate with Product, Technology, Operations, and Risk teams to improve the overall lending process
Recommend changes to lending criteria based on portfolio performance and emerging credit risks
Requirements
4+ years of experience in underwriting, credit risk, credit analysis, or a related role within fintech, banking, consumer finance, or financial services
At least 1–2 years of experience managing or supervising an underwriting/credit team
Strong understanding of credit risk, loan assessment, underwriting principles, and lending operations
Experience in digital lending or fintech is highly desirable
Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to interpret financial and customer data
Proficiency in Excel; experience with SQL, Power BI, or other data analytics tools is an advantage
Strong knowledge of credit scoring, portfolio monitoring, and risk assessment techniques
Excellent attention to detail and ability to make sound credit decisions under pressure
Strong leadership, communication, and team-management skills
Ability to identify fraud indicators and potential credit risks
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field
Professional certification in Risk Management, Credit, Finance, or a related field is an added advantage
